Allium

The long stem of the Allium with it’s bold globe of flowers adds a strong line element to a floral design. The Allium comes in a variety of colours including purple, pink, blue, white and yellow perfect for most wedding colour palettes.

Alstoemeria

Alstroemeria flower spray off to a single stem and blooms to a trumpet shaped flower forming a delicate cluster. Alstroemeria is a great flower to create additional value to any wedding floral arrangement. This flower comes in a wide variety of colours and so is ideal when trying to find the perfect colour for your wedding colour palette.

Amaranthus

Amaryllis

The amaryllis is a trumpet shaped flower which symbolizes pride, determination, and radiant beauty making it one of the most used flowers for wedding bouquets and wedding arrangements. The amaryllis comes in several shades including Red, pink, orange, salmon and white perfect for many weddings.

Anemone

Delicate oval shaped petals, surrounding a dark round centre, making cup shaped solitary flowers. The downside of the anemone is that it drinks a lot of water and therefore is not feasible to be used for summer weddings in Malta. The anemone comes in red, pink, purple, blue and white.

Astilbe

The astilbe is marked by its feathery and delicate appearance. Just like gypsophilia/baby’s breath astilbe is known for its timeless elegance and back in 2012 saw a resurgence in popularity when it was widely used for wedding bouquets, wedding arrangements and other floral designs. Just like many other flower spices the astilbe colour ranges from white to pink, peach, red and purple.

Astrantia

Astrabtia is highly regarded by floral designers for the unique umbels of starry flowers. When used correctly, the astrantia can create a beautiful and interesting contrast to any wedding floral arrangement. With over 10 different astrantia strains this specific colour can be found in variations of pink/purple shades and also white.

Calla Lily

These flowers are known for their delicate beauty and enhance the beauty of your wedding bouquet. These eye-catching lilies symbolize innocence and purity and are mostly used for summer and spring season weddings. Even though Calla lilies have timeless beauty, nowadays some wedding couples opt not to use calla lilies and choose newer trends such as Boho style. Calla lilies colour varies from white to dark purple.

Chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum is a unique species that blooms in a variety of shapes including the pompon, daisy-like, and button. Due to its blooming variety and colours the Chrysanthemum is widely used for weddings and fresh floral bouquets.

Cornflower

With a small thistle like appearance, this single flowered stem boasts an intense vibrant coloured hue that radiates from the centre, outward. Even though the flower has other shades including white, pink and yellow, blue is the most common which is why it’s mostly popular for weddings in April and May.

Delphinium

The delphinium is a very commonly used flower for many occasions, such as engagement parties, weddings, events, parties and much more. The delphinium consists of spike shaped clusters of flowers 8 to 20 inches long and an 18 to 48 inch long stem. The flowers themselves are trumpet-shaped whilst at full bloom giving it more surface area covered. The delphiniums have a wide spectrum of different colours including lavender, blue, dark blue, pink, purple, red and white.

Garden Rose

The garden rose is also known as cabbage rose due to its unique petal shape and composition. The flower comes in a wide variety of shapes, textures and an extensive amount of different shades determined by the specific country of origin. The garden rose is a high-end flower widely used for both wedding bridal bouquets and other arrangements for both Church and reception.

Gerbera

The gerbera flower is also a very popular flower due to its classical flower shape. Many confuse the gerbera flower with a daisy but the difference of these two flowers is quickly noticeable due to the size. The gerbera’s colour palette includes, but is not limited to oranges, reds, pinks, whites, yellows and bi-colors, some with contrasting centres. Even though gerbera may sound like the perfect flower for your wedding day, some opt not to use it due to its low price perception.

Gladiolus

The gladiolus is a thick stem with multiple flowers located on one side. Blossoms may be plain, fringed or ruffled and forms may vary from trumpet shaped like an amaryllis to rosebud-like to tulip shaped. The gladiolus comes in a variety of colours and are the perfect companion for a florist when it comes to increasing length in a wedding floral arrangement.

Gloriosa Lily

The Gloriosa flower is a very beautiful and has a wonderfully unusual blossom with long curled petals that reflex 180 degrees. The gloriosa lily colour is limited to bright crimson petals, for this reason this flower isn’t as popular with the wedding community and so can be omitted from wedding floral designs such as bridal bouquets and wedding arrangements.

Heather

Heather is a long stem and a cluster of tiny bell-shaped flowers, similar to gladiolus flower but it blooms all the way round. Florists often use heather both as a filler and an accent flower, tall variations of the Heather flower can also be used to form shapes and decorate basket handles. This specific flower comes in 4 different shades, pink, red, white and lavender purple.

Hyacinth

These beautiful and fragrant blossoms are a wonderful addition to a wedding floral arrangement. The star shaped florets are clustered on a single rounded spike 6 to 8 inches long. The hyacinth flower is currently very fashionable amongst the wedding community because of its variety of pastel colours and fragrant blossoms.

Hydrangea

A wonderful mass flower with beautiful coloration and textural interest in large arrangements and sometimes even floral bouquets. Hydrangeas are just like orchids, offering timeless elegance and are extremely popular for weddings and events. Hydrangea comes in different shades of whites, pinks and blues.

Lilac

With one of the earliest and shortest blooms, lilacs signify spring and renewal. Very similar to the hyacinth, the lilac also known as syringa is full of thickly massed clusters of florets, highly fragranced. The lilac flower comes in 4 different colours white, cream, pinks, and purples.

Lily of the Valley

Lily of the valley comes in short stems with tiny bell shaped flowers, generally white and light pink. Just like many other flowers, lily of the valley has a unique fragrance and is highly used all around the world for weddings and corsages.

Liliums

Liliums also known as Lilies are popular worldwide because of their unique flower shape. All types of lilies fall into two categories the oriental lilies and Asiatic lilies and both have different floral specifications. Lilies come in a wide variety of different colours and one can easily find the perfect match with the wedding colour palette.

Lisianthus (Eustoma)

Lisianthus also known as Eustoma bloom with multi-petal blossoms, similar to rose-like blooms. Due to its layered petals, glossy shine and pastel colour variations, the lisianthus is the perfect companion for any wedding floral design during any wedding season.

Orchid

The Orchid is composed with five outer petals and one inner petal with a fringed boat shaped lip. Orchids are one of the most popular cut flower and plants, favoured for their beauty, versatility and textures. The orchid has been and will retain its position as one of the top elegant and trending flowers of all time for weddings. The Orchid can be found in a variety of colours and textures, including blue, purple, red, pink, white, yellow, orange and green orchids.

Peony

The peony flower is a large beautiful flower with unique clustered petals giving the focal point to your wedding bridal bouquet or wedding floral arrangement. Peonies are just like roses as they’re loved by many couples and considered the go-to flower due to its unique design and high-end characteristics. This specific flower comes in different shades of pink, red, burgundy, and white.

Protea

The protea has various different designs and colours depending on the protea strain. As the stephanotis is a single coloured flower and stemless, its use is diminished and therefore sometimes not selected for wedding floral arrangements and bridal bouquets. Sweet Pea

The sweet pea is a wonderful flower with their delicate petals and soft fragrance. Many florists worldwide use this flower as a staple for wedding floral designs. Sweet pea comes in 4 different colour shades white, pink, purple and red. Its soft look and touch is an amazing addition to any floral design.

Tulip

Tulips are one of the most famous flowers in Europe due to its floral hub in the Netherlands. Tulips blossoms are grouped into four categories; single-rounded, double-rounded, parrot (fringed), and lily flowered (pointed petals). The extensive variety of blooms and colours gives a good balance to anyone looking to create a unique wedding floral mood board and colour palette. Unfortunately tulips don’t do well in warm weather and therefore are not optimal to use during the wedding season.

Viburnum

The viburnum is a shrub or tree like plant that grows clusters of very small flowers from a berry like capsule. The viburnum berry and bloom comes in red, pink, blue, purple, and even black

Filler Flowers

Filler flowers add texture and bulk to any wedding flower arrangement, floral bouquet and any other floral design. The filler flowers are equally as important as the dominant flowers because they complement the entire design, just like the main focus flowers and foliage. The bulkiness, colour and type of flower are all dependent on the wedding mood board you’ve created or the style you’re looking to achieve. So, if you’re going for a Boho style you might select a mixture of either cool coloured flowers or neutral flowers such as gypsophila with less volume to create a softer, flowing and Boho effect.

Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila)

The flower is recognized as a cluster of complex branches filled with dozens of tiny white blooms. The gypsophila is the perfect flower for weddings due to its colour and unique floral bloom. Many couples around the world opt to either use gypsophila as a standalone flower or as a filler with wedding bouquets and wedding arrangements. The flower also comes in different pink shades but the white is trendier when it comes to wedding floral designs.

Limonium

The limonium flower is described as tiny papery flowers that come as a bunch, making it a great filler. The limonium comes in a range of different colours including lavender, peach, pink, purple, white and yellow. Regardless of your wedding mood board the limonium is a perfect floral filler due to its diverse colour range and tiny floral blooms.

Ornithogalum

Ornithogalum also known as Star of Bethlehem is a popular wedding filler flower with different types of blooms and colours. The most popular colour choice of Ornithogalum for weddings is white as they create a contrast between other light coloured flowers.

Queen Anne’s Lace

The queen anne’s lace is a lace like flower, hence the name – measuring 3 to 6 inches across. It is perfect to use as a filler with a bridal bouquet or a wedding floral arrangement. This specific flower is available in white and green/yellow which can easily be located in various places around Malta and Gozo’s countryside.

Rice Flower

Just like many other filler flowers the rice flower has many tiny flower heads in dense clusters at the ends of the stems. Apart from the very small flower heads, the rice flower is not fragrant and therefore is an ideal filler flower for anyone with severe allergic reaction to flower scent.

Scabiosa Pod

The scabiosa pod is a ball-shaped head flower of around 1 inch in diameter. Their unique colour and look make them the perfect filler flower with a wide range of different styles to be implemented with. The scabiosa pod will add the perfect texture you’re looking for in any wedding floral unique design.

Thistle

As soon as you see a thistle you’ll notice lots of texture and that’s exactly what it adds to any wedding floral design. Even though it may look to be harmful, the thistles are harmless due to their small, flexible and soft spikes. The thistle is very unique and is loved by many wedding floral designers because of its unique snowflake-shaped bloom with a cone centre. The thistle comes in two colours blue and discoloured green/grey. The thistle makes a great filler for many wedding styles and is currently being used in many weddings.

Trachelium

Trachelium is an umbrella-shaped filler flower, widely known for its lateral stems that bloom bushy clusters of tiny flower heads. The trachelium’s stand-out texture and uniqueness gives any wedding floral design a beautiful enhancement. The trachelium comes in 4 main colours green, lavender, white and purple.

Veronica

Veronica is currently very fashionable with the wedding and floral community, due to its truly unique bloom. The veronica is a long, thin bloom with numerous florets adding height and interest to any wedding floral design. Its colour has an ombre effect from the starting of the florets until the tip. The ombre effect starts from the bottom as either white, purple, blue, lavender or pink and ends with the colour green.

Wax Flower

The wax flower is a wonderful filler flower with tiny cup shaped blooms, surrounded by five rounded petals. It is common for the wax flower to have many tiny un-bloomed buds as well, which in our expert advice gives the perfect texture for certain wedding styles whilst also allowing flow throughout the wedding floral design. The wax flower is naturally available in white, shades of pink, lavender and sometimes even purple.

Bouvardia

The bouvardia filler flower is very similar to stephanotis flower, the main visible difference is the fact that bouvardia is more clustered with floral heads making it the perfect filler flower for an all -white wedding theme. The bouvardia is commonly found in white but other shades of pink, reds and oranges exist and with the right floral design it can truly create a unique contrast.

Aster

Aster is grown in bushes other than single stems and it consists of a generous amount of small daisy like flowers all clustered together. The main colours of an aster is white petals and yellow centre, but is also found in purple, yellow and pink petals. Due to its size and clustered flowers it makes a great filler flower, perfect for a wild look to your wedding arrangement or bouquet, but if used correctly it can also be utilised for other styles.

Branches are a unique addition to any wedding floral arrangement, creating contrast and volume, most soon to be married couples don’t usually think about branches as most of the time their focus is on the flower aspect of a floral design. Blossom Branches

Blossom branches, also known as Sakura in the Japanese region, are cut directly from trees which bloom beautiful flowers. The blossom branches come in different colours including white, and different shades of pinks, reds and purples. The blossom branches are widely used for weddings and events due to its unique blooming characteristic, enabling florists to create more height to an arrangement while still retaining the beauty of flowers.

Corylus Branch

Corylus branch characteristics are very similar to a mash up of manzanita branch and curly willow. The main characteristics of the corylus branch is its unsymmetrical curls and the strength once dried. This branch is great to create a nice tall arrangement with different flowers attached to mimic a blossom branch, but with a more unique flower head like a gerbera or rose.

Curly Willow

The name curly willow comes from its unique shape of curled braches. Very popular with interior designers and other decorators, the curly willow also makes a great impression and is frequently used to achieve unique designs where its natural curves and twist will highly benefit the design.

Dogwood Branches

Dogwood branches are a unique branch due to its burgundy and sometimes pinkish colour. When dogwood branches are still fresh the florist is able to use it for floral bouquets to create a more dynamic design to the bridal bouquet. The dogwood branches are perfect for anyone looking to add some colour to their wedding floral designs without having too much colour contrast.

Magnolia Branch

The magnolia branch has a unique characteristic which many other branches don’t, it blooms a large head of flowers and its colours may vary according to the grown region. Even though its main feature is the larger than usual blooming head, it is often also used with the flowers closed or simply just using the branch to create a tree effect.

Manzanita Branch

The manzanita branch comes from shrubs and small trees. The manzanita branch is a popular choice for wedding floral arrangements and also for other décor due to its unique shape, colour, and strength. Even though it only goes with a specific wedding mood board, the manzanita branch is very popular across the wedding community.

Mitsumata Branches

The mitsumata branches are known by many decorators, interior designers and florists, for the many variables which are achieved when using the mitsumata branches. The smooth surface of the mitsumata branch gives it an additional high-end look, yet it still looks natural and elegant, making it perfect for weddings and other floral arrangements. Another unique characteristic of the mitusmata branch is that it comes almost in every colour, but this is highly dependent on the availability due to manufacturing reasons.

Pussy Willow

The pussy willow is also a very unique branch, which comes directly from the willow tree. With small fluffy/furry white bumps it adds additional texture. Whenever this specific branch is combined with a wedding floral arrangement it adds the perfect touch with a dazzling effect for specific wedding styles.

Quince Branches

The quince branches are unique branches with blossoming flower in certain temperatures. This specific branch is very popular amongst the wedding florist community due to its shape and unique characteristics. The blooms themselves come in two colours, different shades of pink and white.

Dusty Miller

Dusty miller is a silvery-blue foliage with a soft, felt like texture. Dusty miller offers a lush and unique texture and pairs incredibly well with deep dramatic colours for winter weddings.

Eucalyptus (various types)

The eucalyptus is a famous foliage, popular with wedding florists and often selected for fresh flower bouquets. There are hundreds of different eucalyptus. The most popular types of eucalyptus are silver dollar eucalyptus, willow eucalyptus, seeded eucalyptus and baby blue eucalyptus.

Galax Leaves

The galax leaves are full rich reds and vivid greens and are ideal for accenting glamorous, chic flowers and making arrangements more beautiful. Galax leaves are about the size of a hand, with serrated edges that frame wedding floral arrangements perfectly. The Galax leaves are mainly used for small bistro table designs due to their size and rich colour.

Herbs

Herbs have been increasing in popularity when it comes to specific wedding trends because they can really help to complement an entire mood. Fun Fact: During one of the biggest weddings in Malta many herbs have been used to create a beautiful contrast near the buffet area.

Monstera

The monstera leaf is known for its large glossy striking green leaves which are broad, heart shaped, dark green and often have several holes in the leave blade. The monstera is popular with wedding florists because of its size – ranging from 10” up-to 22” width. The monstera is mainly used for floral arrangements but sometimes certain styles give us the ability to use the Monstera as foliage for a floral bouquet.

Olive leaves

The Olive leaves main colour is green with some grey. These leaves aren’t used as frequently as other foliage but due to the local culture many destination weddings and Maltese couples choose this foliage to represent something or simply because of its minimalistic appeal. Olive leaves are mainly used for wedding floral arrangements but can also be used with a bridal bouquet considering the right wedding style.

Panicum

There are many types and variations of panicum; its main colour is green with touches of darker shades of red. The panicum is an elegant grass with rigid glaucous stems and upright leaves. Just like many other foliage, panicum is not ideally used as a sole foliage. Most of the time floral designers use it with a variety of other foliage to create a nice flowy and full effect with the panicum.

Plumosa Fern

Plumosa fern stems are skinny, yet sturdy making the foliage look whimsical with an almost cloud-like essence. The plumosa fern is a very unique foliage leaf providing the perfect softness to any wedding floral design. The plumosa fern is not used as filling foliage but more of a textured foliage to add additional style and charm to the foliage and floral design.

Beargrass

Beargrass is very similar to panicum but has a different colour range and different looking leaf. The beargrass creates an enhanced effect and a more field like feel. It’s great when used to create a comprehensive look with its soft and flowy like foliage. Due to its characteristics the beargrass is mainly used for floral arrangements rather than floral bouquets.

Hedera

Hedera also commonly known as Ivy is a very interesting foliage leaf as floral designers are able to create innovative and unique designs by maximising its main characteristic. The ivy is mainly found hanging from tress, rocks or ground-creeping, its natural size varies from 5cm up-to 25cm long but can easily be extended further. There are countless floral designs you can use this for, including but not limited to decorating a tree with more foliage, cake décor, floral arrangements, retro and boho styled bouquets, floral arches and pew décor.

Ruscus

Ruscus is considered a classic foliage because it’s one of the first leaves that was used by floral designers to create more construct using foliage. The dainty greenery adds the perfect soft touch to any floral design due to its multiple laterals that are covered in green leaves. The ruscus looks at its finest when it is surrounded with a complex variety of high-end filler flowers and other flowers such as avalanche white roses, delphinium, hydrangea, etc.

Palms

Palms are widely known all around the world for their distinctive and unique shape, but many don’t appreciate that they are also highly used within the floral community for flower arrangements. Even though palms are considered a bit rough at the edges, there are many different types of palms which enable floral designers to create just about any floral design with the correct type of palm and floral design application.
